Board of Supervisors Update
|
On 9/28 we received a report on the BOS's $3 million dollar investment in childcare, using American Rescue Plan Act funds back in 2022. The Covid epidemic demonstrated the critical importance of childcare for working families and employers. The effort to build more childcare openings/opportunities, required a strategic plan that included:
- $952,000 - to stabalize 89% o fthe exhisting childcare options, helping 287 providers
- $900,000 - invested in building up the childcare workforce. This included recruitment, education and career development which resulted in 48 new early childcare educators, 2,266 professional development hours for 138 exhisting educators, 260 stipends distributed to further career development.
- $1.09 million - to expand childcare capacity, including 19 competitive bids, 18 targeeted awards resulting in 108 more openings for families seeking childcare.
San Luis Obispo County's investment lead to First 5 being awarded funds from the UpLift Coalition, focusing on ecenomic development, resulting in a childcare coalition taking the effort further into the details of designing, and operating childcare facilities. Now Comes the Work of Protecting Wild Cherry Canyon
|
The recent approval of funding to support the acquisition of Wild Cherry Canyon marks an exciting milestone for the future of the Diablo Canyon Lands. As we celebrate this step toward permanent conservation, the work now turns to ensuring future public access is thoughtful, safe, and balanced with tribal partnership, conservation, and long-term stewardship.
I recently shared my thoughts in the Telegram Tribune and New Times on what this milestone means and the work ahead. Read my full statement on our website.

I’m honored to have been elected Chair of Central Coast Community Energy’s (3CE) Policy Board for the 2026–27 term. The agency now services more than 1.2 million people and 515,000 customer accountants across residential, commercial, and industrial and agriculture industries. At the annual 3CE meeting, the Policy and Operations boards approved a budget that included a new Energy Solutions Department, to expand 3CE’s ability to stimulate economic development with local energy generation projects scaled for government agencies and businesses.
Energy has been an important part of my professional life, including my work in renewable energy development and electric transmission and distribution infrastructure. I look forward to bringing that experience to this role and working with leaders from across the five-member central coast counties to support reliable, affordable and clean energy for the communities we serve.
I’m grateful to my fellow board members for their confidence and look forward to working alongside newly elected Vice Chair and Salinas City Councilmember José Luis Barajas in the year ahead. You can read the full press release here.

Know Your Zone Before An Emergency
|
With storm season quickly approaching and fire season not yet behind us, now is a good time to make sure you Know Your Zone.
San Luis Obispo County uses evacuation zones to help residents quickly identify when their area is under an evacuation warning or order. Take a few minutes to look up your zone now, write it down, and post it somewhere easy to find so everyone in your household knows it.
You can find your evacuation zone, along with emergency preparedness information and resources, at ReadySLO.org.

The Buckley Road Corridor Concept Plan aims to establish a long-term vision for the corridor. Key priorities include addressing speeding, improving access for residents, and enhancing facilities for walking and biking. This is just planning as this project is yet to find funding.
